Summary:
Travis (Scott), the son of an underworld kingpin and self-proclaimed
archaeologist,
disappears in the Amazon in search of a priceless artifact. Beck (Rock), the
kingpin's retrieval expert, has one last job before he can open his restaurant
(bring Travis back home). Despite their hostility - and admiration for the same woman (Dawson) - the two must eventually join forces to
fight the evil head (Walken) of a gold-mining corporation who is after the same
treasure.
Review:
Dwayne Johnson, pro wrestling's baddest bad boy, shows us why his WWE days
are in the rear view mirror, with the release of this Universal
action-comedy. The movie begins with Beck (Dwayne Johnson) putting the smack
down on a couple of wannabe thugs in a nightclub. Although the scene might
seem simple it establishes the character traits for Beck. For one, you
realize that Beck doesn't like guns and utilizes his quickness and brute
strength. Secondly, he's all about giving the villains a choice the easy way
or my way. Unfortunately this particular motif is overused in the movie and
becomes played out near the end of the film.
Seann William Scott (Travis) proves he's no pushover either by delivering
another solid performance as Beck's obnoxious, full-of-himself target. The
impressive thing about this movie is that there is good on-screen chemistry
between Beck and Travis which really saves this movie from being a total
waste of time. Unfortunately there is nothing special about the premise of
this flick, nor are there any clever twists, explosive scenes, or sexual
tension between the main characters and Rosario Dawson (Mariana). Therefore,
even though there are many decent scenes and little sparks of humor along
the way, nothing this movie does helps it stand out from a run-of-the-mill
action movie.
But the movie is entertaining at parts (scenes with monkeys and natives)
and the on-screen chemistry gives the flick certain redeeming qualities.
Throw in one part Indiana Jones and add another part Bad Boys and you have
this movie in a nutshell. Unfortunately this movie never finds it's way out
of the shell, but if you're looking for a no-brain-cells-necessary flick
which will give you a couple of laughs then you've found a way to spend a
hour and 44 minutes
See this movie if you're a fan of:
Seann William Scott (Actor, American Pie, American Wedding, Bulletproof
Monk)
Dwayne Johnson (Actor, Scorpion King and The Rock in WWE)
Bad Boys 2 (2003)
Subpar archaeological thrillers (Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life, etc)
Rush Hour (1998)
