Summary:
Jim Carrey plays Bruce Nolan, a local Eyewitness News TV reporter in Buffalo, New York, best
known for doing human interest stories--which makes everyone happy but him.
Bruce has his eyes on an open anchorman position. Bruce is handed a
great opportunity when he's asked to do the 23rd anniversary of Niagra Falls'
famed Maid of the Mist boat, which will air live during sweeps. Just before Bruce goes live--that the
co-anchor position, about to be vacated, is given to Bruce's rival. As millions of
viewers watch on, Bruce has an on-camera meltdown, punctuated by
a four-letter word not yet cleared for network television. On this worst day of
Bruce's life, he's fired from the station, beaten up by a gang of toughs, and
his car is vandalized. Furious, Bruce wails against the Lord for his
rotten luck--which is followed by a curious set of signs, one of which leads him
to an old building called Omni Presents, Inc. God, who plays a Janitor, endows Bruce with
all his powers and challenges him to take on the job and see if he can do any
better!
Review:
We have seen Jim Carrey progress from purely slapstick humor in Ace Ventura
and Dumb and Dumber to more serious roles in The Majestic and Man on the
Moon. One thing that has changed is Carrey's attention to detail. Audiences
will agree Jim Carrey is one of the greatest comedians in box office
history. Everything he touches turns into gold almost overnight. In Bruce
Almighty, Carrey teams up with the production team from Liar Liar and Ace
Ventura (Tom Shadyac) to create comical magic once again. In this film Jim
Carrey, brings Bruce Nolan to life with situational comedy combined with yes
another classic butt joke.
In a one paragraph synopsis Bruce Almighty combines the raucously crude
humor of Ace Ventura, the goody goodyness from Liar
Liar, the physical foolishness of The Mask, and the more serious
slant from The Truman Show. Using every facet of his evolving comedic
genius, Bruce Almighty becomes one of the best comedic performances of Jim
Carrey's career. Surprisingly the jokes in this movie, no matter how
obvious they are, are insanely funny. Everything from answering gods prayers
to making his wife orgasm will have perspective audiences reeling from
laughter in their seats.
