Review:
Just when you thought highly over-budgeted summer blockbusters had run their
course another mediocre film hits box offices worldwide. Although the first
Bad Boys found more popularity in the US through its soundtrack and video
release on retail shelves, Sony decided to leap into a sequel full of big
explosions, over-priced gas guzzling Hummers, and car chases which seemingly
go nowhere.
First of all, I would like to say I enjoyed the first Bad Boys. A
moderately budgeted (23 million) action movie which went on to gross $140
million worldwide and $32 million on rental shelves. Its not to say that
adding bigger explosions and high-powered car chases didn't help the movie,
its just that the movie's storyline doesn't give it a chance or a leg to
stand on.
With the world's many problems, especially post 9-11, Michael Bay and his
production team decided to spend $130 million dollars to make a movie about thwarting
ecstasy drug lords. I just wish some of these directors, producers,
and screenwriters would release that being different sometimes doesn't work.
Many of this sites visitors and I, live simple lives and may come into
contact with Marijuana and Ecstasy over the course of our lives. Not to say
that I promote these drugs in any way shape or form, but its just that
movies have high-profile plots for a reason. Because we like to throwdown
$8.75 at a movie theater and escape from our everyday lives.
Besides having a low-profile plot, Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckenhimmer
seemingly use their fondness of love triangles to death. First we had Armageddon
with Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Liv Tyler. Then we had Pearl Harbor with
Josh Hartnett, Ben Affleck, and Kate Beckinsdale. It just seems like a
summer can't go by without an over-budgeted Bruckenhimmer and Bay
extravaganza with a love triangle.
Besides the troublesome producing, writing, and directing behind this
movie, the acting was quite decent. The chemistry between Will Smith and
Martin Lawerence is the only characteristic which saves this movie from
utter chaos. Although this movie is somewhat entertaining, a watered down
plot and bad cinematography sends this movie into the abyss in the Summer of
Sequels.
See this movie if you're a fan of:

In Black)
